Relegation Battles V. European Football

I have to say I loved the relegation scraps down the years. 1995: Beating Blackburn 2-0 when they were top and eventual champions
1997: Hartson and Kitson scoring for fun. Rio thrown into midfield and scoring at Coventry. 2-1 up v Chelsea at home Mark Hughes equalises on 87 mins.... Kitson gets a goal in the last minute to win 3-2. Never forget listening to that game on the radio and going mental.
2007: "The Great Escape". Still watch the clip of Tevez's goals on Youtube.
Makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck thinking about those seasons.
The thought of European football leaves me cold. Does anyone actually care about the Europa league?

I know what you mean about that WIgan game, was absoultely amazing in the build up, two Demba goals (Ba ba ba ba ba ba) half time in the concourse was brilliant as all other results were in our favour.
Then we all know what happened, by the end of that 2nd half I never wanted to be involved in a relgation battle ever again. Only thing I can take away from it is that we won at Wembley 12 months later.

I couldn't give two shits about European football now purely as I don't like the format for either competition, but fuck me being at the top battling for 4th spot is better than a relegation scrap.
Final 10 games might be fun if you avoid the drop, but means you've had 28 games of utter shit prior to that.

Regular European football means better players and better football.
I also suspect it'll give us a chance to rebuild the academy. Kids won't be drawn automatically to Chelsea and Arsenal.

You can't beat that sense of relief when you know you are safe and as you said we have had plenty of relegation battles over the years. However, this is a new West Ham we have a manager who is brave, bold, adventurous, intelligent and most importantly knows what us fans want. On Sunday when the Mancs equalised I genuinely feared the worst if walrus chops was in charge you would have put your mortgage on us losing that game. But not Slav I could be wrong but I don't think we had won a corner up until they scored. We then forced 4 in the last 7 minutes.

A this point in the season, they are much the same thing.
"Great escape" form would see us get 17 or 18 points from our last 9 games, which could easily see CL football

We always seem to have a spastic thread like this every time we've been faced with what some seem to dread as mid-table obscurity, let alone a season as wonderful as this one.
Let's think about this for a minute. Doing fucking shit all season, losing from seemingly winning positions and biting your fingers to the bone right up until the last game of the season or a cup final and week in Palermo?
Tough question that.

I'll be happy to see the back of relegation battles.
When we become Chamions League regulars, qualifying for Europe battles will become our new relegation battles.

2010/11 was incredibly depressing to watch.
The great escape was the first time stateside it was possible to follow a team (at least one that didn't make you a cunt) week-in/week-out. that was a lot of fun, but not as much fun as this season has been, european football be damned.

This new era...part of what makes our club is being the plucky, full of themselves written off underdog, sticking it to the so-called 'Elite'.
Bearing the big teams this year has been sonsweet because they underestimated us and we gave them what for.
If we ourselves become genuine players, which is obviously what's best for the club, will be interesting to see what becomes of our underdog-winning-out-of-turn psyche.
Have to say it's one of the things I love about West Ham.

I love a relegation battle...great moments that stand out for me are
Bolton & Birmingham away in 2003.
Wigan away in 2011.

I've had enough of relegation battles.
I'd like Chelsea & Arsenal fans (amongst others) to enjoy some of the fun.
Can remember sitting in my car outside the house for 10 mins in the cold waiting for confirmation that Middlesbrough (I think) had drawn 0-0 somewhere one wet Wednesday night and we were safe. No thanks

The Europa League looks like a bit of fun i suppose. The champions league really does leave me cold. Haven't got bt sport so I haven't seen a minute of it this year and haven't once wished I was watching it

I sort of get what you mean about European football. I think I would end up a bit like Manchester city fans. I mean I'll enjoy going to a few new places and shit, but it doesn't capture me really.
But it is the natural progression for us unfortunately.

Relegation scraps are only enjoyable in hindsight, and that's not forgetting at least half the season must have been dire to be in that position- this season on has been enjoyable from the start- no contest really.

Erm bit of a no brainer isn't it.....
Relegation battles - struggling to get 3 points at some tin pot Northern club in May.
European football - dropping anchor in some nice little bar just off the main square, with your top off and basking in the glorious autumn sunshine, and drinking cheap high strength lager and the potentially going to a brass house in the evening.

I know where you're coming from re: the relegation battles, but how can any West Ham supporter say this? I know its fashionable to slag off the Europa league but I can't get my head round it.
The thought of thousands of us in some continental shithole excites me regardless of the competition. Not like we've been spoilt for European football for the last 20 years.

The problem for me is not the games we battle and win to escape relegation it's instead all the games we play beforehand that have lead us into a relegation scenario.
